How important is the Watch you wear?

Which watch you wear is a complicated tangle of snobbery and inverted snobbery. Even Roman Abramovich, despite his almost unlimited wealth, has been spotted wearing an ordinary plastic digital watch – when you might expect him to sport a more ostentatious brand.

It’s been reported recently that digital watches are indeed making comeback, partly because of the retro-nostalgic trend for 80s fashions but also because of their practical nature which appeals to the macho anti-fashion types. It’s true to say that for every man who aspires to an expensive “status” watch there will be another who wouldn’t be seen dead one.

But, watches can undoubtedly be an indicator of wealth and status so it’s important to choose the watch you wear carefully – whichever you choose it will be a reflection of you. Whether you decide to buy a Seiko watch or a Breil watch, a digital or analogue, do your research carefully and try to figure out what impression you are hoping to make.

What Factors to Consider When Buying a Watch

There are a huge variety of watches available for consumer to choose from. So, what factors should you consider when buying a watch?

Budget – this is a major consideration as watches vary enormously in price depending on what brand you choose, what materials are used, and the type of movement the watch has and where it has been made. For instance, Swiss made watches are synonymous with quality and often represent the very high-end brands.

Use – you need to decide what purpose you want the watch for and what occasions you are likely to be wearing the watch on. There are many watches which are designed for a particular purpose like sports watches or ladies formal evening watches. Obviously, they will vary in style and design as well as the functions they offer. A ladies evening watch is unlikely to be suitable for diving in and will probably not feature an alarm clock. But it will probably look fabulously glamorous and compliment your jewellery perfectly.

Design/Image – you will also need to consider how important image is to you and whether you are influenced by fashion and celebrity. Is it important to you to have the latest trend? You may consider what impression the watch you wear gives to other people. For instance, if you are a serious business man you may choose to wear a good quality, traditional watch which will reflect the image you wish to portray.

Reputation – you will probably choose a watch based on the reputation of the manufacturer. You might choose a watch from a long established manufacturer who has built their reputation over the years or you might take the recommendation of a friend. For example, Breil watches are made by a prestigious Italian designer and have a long established reputation for representing good taste and refined style. Seiko watches are made in Japan and have a reputation built on the quality, precision and reliability of their product.

These are just a few of the things to consider when you are buying a watch.
