The internal mechanism of a timepiece drives the moving parts. From a windup mechanism to a digital display, watch companies are constantly trying to up dates and improve watch movements.
There various types of watch movements. Early watch designs, such as pocket watches used a full plate movement, where the main moving parts were located on two plates held by a bracket. As technology developed in the 18th century a thinner and smaller back plate was introduced.
Modern watches have a bridge movement, replacing plates. This allows the movement in the watch to move more easily and efficiently. Watches are either mechanical or automatic. Mechanical watches have a self-winding mechanism where a crown needs to be turned daily. Automatic watches are powered by a battery or kinetic energy. Most of the major watch companies, from Breil watches to Seiko, offer an extensive range of both ladies and gents automatic or mechanical timepieces.
