Solar Powered Watches

Living in an environmentally aware society we all want to do what we can. Recently demand for kinetic and solar powered watches has grown as we all try and do our bit for a greener environment.

Solar powered watches have been available since 1977 when Seiko watches introduced their first model. An inbuilt solar panel in the watch face converts sunlight into energy thereby eliminating the need for cell batteries. Seiko have recently introduced a new range of solar watches that don't need just sunlight to power the watch, but can use any form of artificial light.

These technological advanced timepieces only requires two minutes of sun to charge the watch for a days use and three hours to fully charge it. They will even remained charged if left in the darkness for an extended period of time.

There various types of watch movements. Early watch designs, such as pocket watches used a full plate movement, where the main moving parts were located on two plates held by a bracket. As technology developed in the 18th century a thinner and smaller back plate was introduced.

Modern watches have a bridge movement, replacing plates. This allows the movement in the watch to move more easily and efficiently. Watches are either mechanical or automatic. Once you have decided to buy a watch it is important that you familiarise yourself with the general workings of a watch and with the various types of watches available on the market.

An analogue watch is a fairly simple timepiece which displays the time by means of hands and numbers on a watch face. An automatic watch is powered by a battery as opposed to a self winding watch which requires a crown. Chronograph watches are good at recording small spans of time, an example of which is a stop watch.

The general layout of a watch consists of a watch face to display the time and either a strap or bracelet to attach it to the wearers wrist. Some watches require batteries to power them where as kinetic watches are powered by the movement of the wearers arm. Solar powered watches require sunlight. The watch cover tends to be made of glass, acrylic or glass and sapphire combined. There are many brands of watches to choose from and different types. Whether you decide to buy a Seiko Sportura or a Breil Chronograph, the timepiece you choose needs to suit your lifestyle and taste.

If the watch is not in use there is a crown available on the side of the watch to wind up the watch if necessary.

From Breil watches to Seiko all the major watch companies offer an impressive range of automatic watches. One of the main advantages of an automatic watch is that they can not be over wound due to a clutch device that is fitted on the mainspring. If you don't use your automatic watch often you can buy a watch winder which is a device where you can store your watch and it will automatically wind your watch for you on a regular basis.

Which Arm Should You Wear Your Watch On?

Watches as portable timepieces were first introduced by Patek Phillip in 1868 when he first created a bracelet watch which was worn by women. Prior to this watches were worn as fob or pocket watches, around the neck as a pendent or sewn in to secret pockets in a ladies dress.

The first mens wristwatch was introduced by Cartier in 1904 and was called the Santos watch. It was created for workers to keep track of time. As most men tended to be right handed it was worn in on the left hand to prevent it getting damaged and it was easier for the wearer to wind it when it was worn on the left hand.

Many modern watches, such as a Breil watches quartz watch, does not need winding as the watch is powered by a small battery. So really which arm you wear your timepiece on really comes down to a matter of preference. Whether you choose to wear your watch on your left or right handed is really not an issue as watches nowadays are so durable and robust they are no longer as delicate as the first wristwatches that were originally made.

Seiko watches began life in 1881 and since then they have gone on to be a major player in the development of watch technology. From Kinetic watches through to quartz watches, Seiko have numerous designs and styles on offer.

The most important part to remember is to take care not to damage the watch movement. Firstly lay the watch face down on a clean cloth. Check to see it the back of the watch has a screw or snap back. A screw back will require a special watch wrench and a snap back can be pried open.

Next remove the rubber gasket which allows the watch to be waterproof. Remove the battery by sliding a screw driver under it and put in the new battery, ensuring it is the same way up. Replace the rubber gasket followed by the back of the watch. Finally check that then hands of the watch are moving and you can then be sure you have done a good job.

The clocks bears an uncanny resemblance to Big Ben and its face can be seen up to 16 miles away due to the use of illumination of thousands of lights. Muslims hope that the clock will eventually replace Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) as the worlds central time. Muslim clerics consider “Mecca time is the true global meridian”.

From Breil watches to Pulsar all watches and clocks around the world use GMT. This historical tradition was established 126 years ago. During the summer months in the UK the time is one hour ahead of GMT in order to gain more sunlight but time reverts back to GMT in the winter.

The Seiko Watch TV

In 1983 Seiko watches introduced the TV watch. This revolutionary timepiece comprised of a display screen showing the time and a liquid crystal display on which the TV shows were viewed.

This unique timepiece won Seiko a place in the Guinness Book of Records as the world's smallest TV. This was technology at its finest and nowadays it is a sort after collectors item. The screen receiving the TV images consisted of a blue/grey liquid crystal and the watch had a TV receiver built into its design. The wearer was required to wear headphones.

The inbuilt receiver required two batteries thereby making the watch rather bulky. However in its time the Seiko TV watch was a pioneering piece of technology. Many celebrities were pictured wearing the Seiko TV watch including Roger Moore in Octopussy and Johnny Carson on the Tonight Show.

Oldest Mechanical Clock to be Modernised

It has recently been announced that the world's oldest mechanically wound clock is to be modernised.

The world famous clock at Wells Cathedral in Somerset has been set by hand and wound for over 600 years, keeping up with time honoured tradition. Unfortunately since the “Keeper of the Great Clock at Wells” has announced his retirement no replacement can not be found. Three times a week the Keeper, Paul Fisher, has been turning three 250kg weights which takes up to an hour at a time. Reluctantly the decision has been taken to fit an electric motor.

Mechanical clocks, like their watch counterparts, have been used for centuries. Despite the advent of new technology, they are still popular today with over 13% of all watches sold being mechanical. From Breil watches to Tag Heuer, all the major watch companies offer a range of mechanical watches.

USA & Watchmanking

By the 1960's the American watch industry was at an all time low. Despite surviving through the Depression years and two World wars, USA found they could no longer compete with cheap labour markets around the world. Countries, such as Hong Kong, were constantly undercutting prices in the USA which led to many businesses failing.

It took the introduction of the quartz watch in 1969 to gave the watchmaking industry in USA the kick start it needed to recover from its slump and get it back into business again. The development of the quartz watch led to the Americans developing a successful electronics programs for the space industry and the military.

All watch companies worldwide from Breil watches to Rolex have had their ups and downs. Successful competition or similar watch designs at competitive prices can all have an impact on the success of a watch company. The recent global economic crisis impacted the watch industry but they are now showing signs of recovery.

Tips on Caring for Your watch

Like all your possessions if you treat them with care they will serve you well. If you have invested in a watch, especially a high quality one, you must take the time to take care of this intricate timepiece.

Your watch should be serviced on a regular basis. Like a car it needs a tune up on occasion. If your watch is water resistant always ensure you adhere to the makers guidelines as to its depths ratings. Taking your watch into a swimming pool, even if it is water resistant, should be avoided as chlorine can cause erosion.

Even if you watch is shock resistant be careful not to drop your timepiece or use it in extreme temperatures as condensation can form within the watch. A reflective film can be applied to the watch face to prevent glare as can an anti scratch resistant film. All good watchmakers from Breil watches to Rolex will provide instructions on caring for your watch. If you take good care of your watch you will find it will keep good time.

Power Sources for Watches

Originally pocket and early wristwatches were powered by a spring movement. But with advances in technology electronic, solar powered and kinetic watches have bee developed to keep up with the demands of the modern world.

Traditional mechanical watches originally required the wearer to turn a special key to wind up the mechanism daily. Nowadays mechanical watches have a small knob that requires turning and can be powered up to 40 hours. Electronic watches require a battery to provide the power, which can last up to several years. Water resistant watches, such as Seiko watches Divers watch need to be water resistant to ensure the battery remains dry.

The most common form of watch batteries are silver-oxide and lithium batteries. Solar powered batteries can be used, however they require long hours of exposure to the sun. Solar powered watches themselves are powered by a photovoltaic cell which is placed in the face of the watch which in turn powers the battery. Kinetic watches are powered through the movement of the body and energy can be stored for up to 6 months.

As they became more popular as a fashion item, as the likes of Jacques Cousteau and James Bond sported them, other watch companies jumped on the band wagon.  Seiko watches have a great range of durable and stylish dive watches on offer that they are constantly redesigning and up-dating with the latest technology.

Left Handed Watches

Some watch wearers who are left handed prefer to wear their watch on their right wrist. Many watch makers over the years have produced special left handed watched making it easy for the selected few to tell the time.

Only about 10-15% of the country is left handed. There are now many left handed products available to cater for this niche market. Watches and clocks over the years have always been a challenge for lefties. Many companies from Tag Heuer to Breil watches have introduced watches with controls on the right and in some cases a backwards face as some left-handers find it easier to read the time that way. The first left handed watch was introduced by Omega as early as 1902-12 for both men and women.

There are many famous sportsmen who have had special sports watches made for them. In particular Tag Heuer produced a very light 55g watch for Tiger Woods with a winding crown on the right. Most watch makers also produce special diver’s watches for lefthanders. Perhaps the most famous watch lover in the world is leftie  President Obama who proudly displays his array of watches on his right wrist.

Gold Watches

Gold watches have a timeless appeal. The entire major watch manufacturers have a line of gold or gold plated watches. From Seiko watches through to Rolex, beautiful gold timepieces still remain the ultimate status symbol.

With the current increase in the price of gold, gold watches have risen in value by 15% since the beginning of the year. Not only are they seen as fashion accessories but as having valuable investment potential. A recent auction at Christies saw a gold Patek Phillipe watch reach a record price of £3.8 million.

Gold watches are having a revival at present with watches such as Rolex Submarines and Daytona’s becoming very fashionable. As Jean Christophe Babin of Tag Heuer points out that “ It is not that white metal watches have lost their popularity, but just that the full yellow gold bracelet has gained respect and social acceptance”.

A Brief History of Time

The earliest time keeping device that can be accounted for is the use of the sun and moon to work out seasons, dates and time. Stone circles, such as Stonehenge, predicted time by using equinoxes and solstices as a guide.

The Egyptians used shadow clocks to predict times, the most common being sundials. The Chinese favoured the use of water clocks and candle clocks to keep track of time. As technology has advanced over the years mechanical clocks were designed and developed eventually moving from being a specialised craft to mass produced.

Demand for portable timekeeping brought about the development of pocket and wristwatches. Nowadays watches are big business, being worn not just for timekeeping but also as a status symbol. Manufacturers such as Breil Watches and Seiko constantly update their technology to create contemporary designs and up to the minute timepieces.

Medical Watches

Medical watches are important pieces of equipment for individuals who need to take medication at certain intervals. They can be a lifesaver for many.

Easy to follow medical watches are popular among the elderly and children alike as they are simple to understand. For the hard of hearing watches that vibrate make it easy for patients to be alerted. Medical watches are also important for they can store vital information such as the wearer’s medical condition, blood group and emergency contact numbers.

Watches play an important role in everyday life. Not only do they inform the wearer the time of day but the watch that you where is also seen as a reflection of your personality. With so many watches on the market from Breil through to Seiko Watches the choices are numerous.

Glow in the Dark Watches

Since the invention of watches and clocks, telling the time in the dark has always been a challenge. Historically mechanical clocks made a chime on the hour and the on the half hour but clocks of this kind were out of reach for the poor.

Sundials were popular during the day and at night special candles depicted the time as they slowly burned. As time went on luminosity of the dials was developed to enable the watch dial to glow in the dark. Initially radium was used but it was deemed to be unsafe as it is radioactive so it was replaced with titanium. Eventually the use of a small bulb was used to lighten up the dial in the dark.

Watches have become indispensable in today’s modern world. Knowing the time, day or night has somehow become essential. Many watches from Seiko through to Breil Watches have illuminated dials in their watch collections allowing the wearer to always be aware of the time.

Breil Watches

When you buy a Breil watch you know you are buying a watch of quality and prestige. Breil Watches created a collection of timepieces that are well crafted and reliable but at the same time unique and quirky in their design.

Breil or Breil Milano is an Italian company which introduced its first watch to the market in 1939. Always trying to be one step ahead of its competition, Breil embarked on an advertising campaign in recent years using the “Take anything but my Breil” slogan. They used top supermodels and Hollywood actors such as, Edward Norton and Charlize Theron to head their campaign in order to gain as much press attention as possible.

With their stylish and modern range of Italian watches, Briel continue to remain successful. Their philosophy of uniqueness and sensuality symbolises Breil’s individuality as it continues to grow from strength to strength.

Mechanical Watches

The first self winding watch was created by Abraham-Louis Perrelet for his pocket watch design in 1770. Over time improvements have been made and what we have today is a modern self winding mechanism which will generally last for 2 days before it needs winding.

A new concept in mechanical watches is the automatic watch. This watch automatically winds itself by using the energy that the watch wearer produces through movement of his arm. This movement is known as kinetic energy. The Kinetic watch was first introduced by Seiko Watches in 1988.

Whether you choose a wind up watch or a battery one it’s entirely a personal choice. Some find battery wristwatches more convenient; however, there are some watch wearers who get personal enjoyment from interacting with their watch through the process of winding it.

What Does Your Watch Say About You

More often than not watches are not used for telling the time but as a form of adornment and status symbol. Today is an age where watches aren’t always necessary as everywhere you look you can see the time displayed. Most modern appliances show the time.

Some people wear watches to enhance their image. A good quality watch can immediately improve you social standing and how you are viewed by your contemporaries. A wristwatch of value can also enhance your outfit and can show you have good taste. From Seiko Watches through to Breil Watches a good quality timepiece can give you confidence.

Your watch can reflect you personality. As first impressions count, just like wearing a pair of cheap shoes, a cheap watch can make a lasting effect. When choosing a watch look for craftsmanship and quality rather that for the bling effect is displays. Wearing a high end watch with a high end price tag can sometimes not work in your favour.

Watch Faces

The watch face is a distinctive feature which plays an important role in watch design. It not only tells the time but it has to be appealing to the customer to entice them to buy it.

Most watches are either analogue or digital. An analogue watch face has fixed numbers 1-12 in a dial. Sometimes they are shown as roman numerals or no figures are used at all. A digital watch displays just the numbers and other features such as the date and can be used as a stopwatch or as an alarm. Clock and watch faces move clockwise as they originally imitated sundials and as the shadow of the sun moved in that direction that was adopted by watch makers.

Nowadays watch faces are available in numerous designs and styles. Watch companies place important emphasis on their watch face designs even making it possible to design watches to meet individual needs. In the past attempts have been made to add more technology into designs with Seiko Watches attempting to incorporate a TV screen into a watch face, Casio designed a watch that could translate Japanese and Citizen introduced a watch that would react to your voice. However these were all fads that never stood the test of time.

Seiko Watches hope this feature will appeal to the more eco-friendly market. They are targeting the younger generation who are environmentally aware and who find green gadgets appealing.

Seiko Watches hope to introduce a range of ten solar powered wristwatches retailing from £140-£180. Once fully charged these watches will last for 6 months.

Ladies Watches

At the turn of the last century women would wear watches on a chain around their neck, tucked into their bodices or in a small pocket sewn in their skirt. It was considered unseemly and improper for women to wear wrist watches.

Nowadays, ladies watches are big business with all the major watch companies, from Seiko Watches through to Rolex, investing in new styles and designs for women. Small watches seem to be all the fashion at the moment as watches are marketed more as jewellery in their own right. Recently at Baselworld in Switzerland it was highlighted that watches for women are becoming more discreet and decorative.

Whether you are after a durable sports watch, an elegant timepiece or just a simple uncomplicated watch to tell the time with, pick one that works for you. One that you find pleasing to look at because it is you that will be wearing it!

Referee Watches

Referees in a match or any sporting event play a vital role in officiating over the proceedings. Not only do they have to be extremely fit to keep up with the demands for refereeing an event they also need to exhibit exceptional timekeeping.

It is paramount that a referee has an accurate watch in order that no mistakes are made. A good timepiece needs to be durable, reliable and waterproof in order to keep working whatever the weather.

A reliable watch favoured by many referees is Seiko Watches W772 Referee Watch. Its features consist of a countdown timer which is important for sports such as soccer, which is played using time increments. Another strong feature is its ability to be a stopwatch and it also has a secondary timer which allows for play stoppage due to injuries etc. It also boasts a clear face for easy reading, a vibration mode and is water resistant.

Watch Straps

Watches come in all shapes, sizes and materials. All manufacturers, from Seiko Watches through to Breil , offer a wide variety of timepieces to match any taste and pocket.

Titanium watches and straps are very durable but light in weight and long lasting making them a good long term investment. Stainless steel watches are a fairly cheap option and are renowned for being very strong and don’t corrode easily.

The most extravagant watches with matching straps are made from gold. They are seldom used by their owners and are generally brought out for special occasions. They do hold their value though, especially if the price of gold rises and are seen as a good long term investment. Silver watches are similar to gold ones and hold their value but they do tarnish easily.

Straps are important as they need to be adjustable and comfortable. Webbing straps are the cheapest option and are fairly durable. Leather watches are quite common and can be dyed any colour. Rubber straps are strong and water resistant and often used for children’s watches.

Increase In Watch Sales

Following the recent global economic crisis over the previous few years the watch industry, along with many other luxury item products, have all witnessed a fall in revenue due to the “credit crunch”.

In 2009 the Swiss watch makers were still reporting a significant loss in revenue, some as much as 22.3%. This was an all too familiar story from most of the watch companies around the globe, from Seiko Watches through to Tissot all experiencing the effects of the economic downturn.

However, with the market appearing to be starting to move in a more optimistic direction again, analysts are noticing a significant turnaround in the luxury goods market. Items such as, Champagne, jewellery and watches are beginning to report an increase in sale as the public are back out there shopping again!

Time Zones

We have all experienced the confusion of travelling to another country and finding we have to change time. Confusingly either moving time forward and losing precious moments or moving time back and repeating time we have already lived.

In order to measure time it was globally agreed to have a starting point. Noon was decided on, when the sun is highest in the sky. As this occurs at different times around the world, as the earth rotates, it was decided that a point of reference was required. This became known as Greenwich Mean Time (GMT).There are 24 time zones and each zone represents one hour.

The International Date Line (IDL) is an imaginary line on the opposite side of the world to Greenwich which is near London, England. If you cross the line heading west you add a day however if you are travelling east you go back a day and technically arrive before you left!

Modern day clocks and watch companies strive to improve technology in order to keep perfect time. From Seiko Watches through to Dolce and Gabbana, manufacturers constantly try to perfect innovative ideas in order to create the most accurate timepiece.

Seiko Launch New Watch

Seiko Watches chose the annual trade fair, Basel world, to launch the new Seiko Quartz Astron to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the introduction, by Seiko, of the world’s first quartz watch.

When Seiko Watches first launched the original quartz watch back in 1969, it was seen to revolutionise the conventional watch. At the heart of this watch was a crystal oscillator coupled with an open step motor allowing Seiko to produce the most accurate timepiece on the market.

The new Seiko Quartz Astron incorporates the original design, but with the advancement of technology in recent years, Seiko has introduced new and improved concepts such as, a high torque stepping motor with a precise alignment of the second hand. Once again Seiko watches have produced a highly reliable and precision piece of technology creating new standards of timekeeping.

Baselworld Trade Fair 2010

The Baselworld trade fair opened its doors this week to watch companies, raw producers and shop owners. All the major watch companies are scheduled to attend including Seiko watches, Rolex and Fossil.

This show is a highly acclaimed global event. It not only brings all the elements for watch manufacturing together but also allows companies to showcase new products and to promote original and fresh ideas in response to current trends.

With sales in decline over the past year, watch companies have noticed a gradual turnaround. The fragile world economy is still recovering from the recent current financial crisis so small steps are required. Sylvie Ritter, Managing Director of Baselworld adds that "the current economic climate was challenging for most of 2009 and of course this has a negative effect". The watch companies however, remain optimistic.

Limited Edition Seiko Watch

In October 2008 Seiko watches unveiled a new timepiece that was out of this world! The Spring Drive Spacewalk watch was designed by Seiko watches for space tourist Richard Garriot on his inaugural space trip to the International Space Station.

As the watch was to be worn on the outside of the spacesuit it had to go through rigorous tests to ensure that it could withstand extreme radiation and pressure. A Spring Drive movement was selected as it could be exposed to temperature ranges of minus 20c through to plus 70c.

The watch has a traditional face with a date function; it is constructed in a high intensity titanium casing and has a specially designed nylon strap. Only one hundred of these high specification watches were made. They went on sale for $28,000 in February of this year. Last September one was auctioned in New York raising $45,000 for charity.

Daylight Saving Time

This weekend sees the onset of daylight saving time. All wrist watches and clocks will be put forward one hour in order to save an hour of daylight as we enter into spring.

But what is time? Albert Einstein said "space and time are bound up with each other". Time organises our actions and thoughts. Historically timepieces can be traced back through the centuries with the introduction of calendars and sundials to mark time.

With development in recent technology, time is big business. Modern timepieces like wristwatches and digital clocks are constantly being updated. Companies such as, Seiko watches, Tissot and Citizen are always competing to be the first to get the most up to date watch on the market. But if time is relative as some believe, whatever timepiece you own, time flies by for some whilst others see time as dragging!

The Genuine Article

Gone are the days when you could buy a fake watch off a man on the street, nowadays there is global demand for phony timepieces.

The stigma of wearing a replica watch has gone, to a certain extent. Some people chose to save their designer brands for special occasions and wear an alternative watch for everyday use. Others buy one out of curiosity, to impress their friends or as an inexpensive gift. However, these people are buying because of a brand not because they want a quality watch and that shows a lack of integrity on their part. If their watch is fake what else is fake about them!

This multi million pound business is bad news for manufactures of the legitimate products. It has been estimated that over 30 million counterfeit watches are sold each year with £600 million lost in revenues for companies such as, Seiko watches, Omega and Rolex.

Many fakes don’t last long, even if they work at all. When you invest in a classic timepiece you are buying quality and craftsmanship, a watch that can last a lifetime. So what better way to invest in time than buying the genuine article?

Pieces In Time

Pocket watches were the first portable watches to be introduced. They were initially carried by the upper classes and were used not just as timepieces but were regarded as a symbol of class and refinement.

In the early 20th century, watches worn around the wrist were launched and rapidly gained in popularity. Initially adorned by women, wrist watches were redesigned not only as a fashion accessory but marketed as an essential addition to modern day life.

Over the decades, watches using the latest technologies have been designed and improved on, ranging from wind up to quartz precision and digital to linear motion. Traditional watchmakers such as Seiko watches, Casio and Timex have all stood the test of time adapting to changing technologies and trends. They are still around today producing up to the minute timepieces.

There is an exhausting range of ladies and men’s watches on the market to choose from. Just as you think technology has reached its ultimate peak the watch makers surprise us with the introduction of a new range of high tech watches in contemporary designs.

Top Tips for Buying a Watch

Your watch is viewed as a reflection of your personality. It is quite often one of the first things people notice about you. So when buying a watch, it is important to have an image in mind which you wish to project and choose accordingly.

Most importantly it is essential that you buy something that you like; remember you have to look at it every day. Ask yourself, does it reflect your own expression and style. Take into account, when deciding on a watch, that it mirrors your lifestyle. There is no point buying a delicate dress watch if you do a physical job.

Always buy a brand you can trust. Traditional watch companies, such as Seiko watches, produce an extensive range of men’s and ladies watches to suit everyone’s needs and pocket. Keep in mind it’s important to make a good first impression but it’s equally important to enjoy wearing your chosen timepiece.

Swiss Made - the Genuine Article?

It has been revealed recently, that “Swiss made” watches may not be all that they seem. Brands carrying the Swiss label are highly marketable products and best sellers, which is one of the reasons Switzerland is regarded as the market leader in watches.

To qualify for the “Swiss made” label, the watch itself must be assembled in Switzerland and have at least 50% of its components locally made. However, it has come to light that Seiko Instruments Incorporated, who manufactures Seiko watches, has been providing “the intellectual property for its first in-house movement” to Tag Heuer.

The temptation for some manufactures is that they can buy cheaper mechanisms, such as, dials, hands and movements in countries like China or from Seiko watches in Japan for five times cheaper than in Switzerland.

In Switzerland, 80% of watch movements are supplied by Swatch Group’s manufacturing unit ETA, who until recently supplied Tag Heuer. Chief executive Nick Hayek accuses some watch makers “of being hollow brands that invest little in the craft and spend millions on glamorous ad campaigns”. Whether “Swiss made” watches weather the current global economic crisis and still remain on top, remains to be seen.

Millionaires Prefer Seiko

According to a recent article the difference between being rich and acting rich is huge. Millionaires do not necessarily sport the expected brand names. Apparently more millionaires wear Seiko watches than Rolex, and drive Toyota’s rather than BMW’s.

A study which was conducted at the University of Georgia by Thomas Stanley (author of several books about the social behaviour of the rich) illustrated this point perfectly distinguishing between the habits of the super rich and the ordinary man on the street. Buying expensive brands was not found to be a trait common in the rich…but rather those who aspire to appear to be rich and therefore spend over their means.

The study concluded that ultimate happiness has little to do with what we eat, wear and own and that in fact affluent people tend to derive pleasure from more simple things like entertaining their friends and watching their grandchildren play!

Will New Fantasy Sci-Fi Watch be a Success?

There are lots of watch manufacturers in the market. Some, like Seiko Watches have a reputation for designing and making reliable and accurate timepieces.

According to a recent article, others it would seem are obsessed with the recreating fantasy watches like the new watch-phone launched recently and reminiscent of those seen in sci-fi comic pages. The latest example, a watch-phone made by Kempler and Strauss, was being demonstrated at the Las Vegas 2010 Consumer Electronics Show.

The general feeling is that whilst the watch caused quite a stir amongst photographers and journalists attending the show it was unlikely to be successful. The mobile phone industry has developed so much in recent years and young people have got accustomed to having phones in their pockets which do multiple jobs – telling the time, taking photos, recording video as well as communicating.

A wrist watch is an entirely different thing – it’s a fashion accessory, a status symbol, a style choice, a precious gift - but it really doesn’t need to be a mobile phone too. Whist a watch-phone is novel and fun, is there any point?

Seiko's Arctura Range

Seiko Watches Arctura range represents a very masculine style and exudes natural strength. According the Seiko’s own website it stands for “strong, solid build quality and aerodynamic design”. It was inspired by the arc shapes which are found in the natural world like rainbows and the curve of the earth.

Unsurprisingly, because it fits with the ethos of natural strength, the whole range is powered by the movement of the body relying on kinetic power.

Seiko at the Forefront with Green Watches

Watch batteries, like any other sort of battery, are not good for the environment. Not only do they contain harmful chemicals but when you add to this the packaging they come in, which heads straight for the bin, and the carbon emitted whilst they are transported to the consumer, they really are not good for the environment at all.

Seiko watches were at the forefront of the green revolution with the introduction of their Kinetic range back in 1988. Kinetic watches are powered by the movement of your arm and so are completely ecologically sound. There is no need to replace the rechargeable battery, there’s no packaging and no wasteful byproducts. Along with solar powered watches, they really do provide a greener way to keep track of time!

So, How Does Your Kinetic Watch Work?

Kinetic watches are powered solely by the movement of your arm – converting kinetic movement into electrical energy. As you go about your normal daily activities the movements you make cause an oscillating weight to turn, which in turn makes rotor spin which creates a voltage across a coil block. This voltage adds power to the rechargeable battery within.

Seiko Watches, known as a technological powerhouse, were one of the first watch manufacturers to abandon traditional batteries when they introduced their Kinetic range back in 1988.

Within their range Seiko feature various kinetic watches which have different functions and styling like the Ultimate Kinetic Chronograph, the Kinetic Direct Drive, the Kinetic Chronograph, the Kinetic Perpetual, the Kinetic Auto Relay and the Kinetic G.M.T.

The Wristwatch - Where it all Began

Today the wristwatch is rather taken for granted, most people own one and some are considered to be status symbols and are very glamorous indeed. But the wristwatch evolved for practical reasons.

During the 19th Century soldiers began to find carrying pocket watches inconvenient and cumbersome and so they began to develop their own “homemade” wristwatches using very basic leather straps to attach their pocket watches to their wrists. This left both hands free to operate weaponry during battle and enabled them to check the time and synchronize their watches when necessary.

The wristwatch continued to develop from these humble beginnings and currently there are hundreds of varieties of wristwatches available including Breil Watches and Seiko Watches.

How important is the Watch you wear?

Which watch you wear is a complicated tangle of snobbery and inverted snobbery. Even Roman Abramovich, despite his almost unlimited wealth, has been spotted wearing an ordinary plastic digital watch – when you might expect him to sport a more ostentatious brand.

It’s been reported recently that digital watches are indeed making comeback, partly because of the retro-nostalgic trend for 80s fashions but also because of their practical nature which appeals to the macho anti-fashion types. It’s true to say that for every man who aspires to an expensive “status” watch there will be another who wouldn’t be seen dead one.

But, watches can undoubtedly be an indicator of wealth and status so it’s important to choose the watch you wear carefully – whichever you choose it will be a reflection of you. Whether you decide to buy a Seiko watch or a Breil watch, a digital or analogue, do your research carefully and try to figure out what impression you are hoping to make.

What Factors to Consider When Buying a Watch

There are a huge variety of watches available for consumer to choose from. So, what factors should you consider when buying a watch?

Budget – this is a major consideration as watches vary enormously in price depending on what brand you choose, what materials are used, and the type of movement the watch has and where it has been made. For instance, Swiss made watches are synonymous with quality and often represent the very high-end brands.

Use – you need to decide what purpose you want the watch for and what occasions you are likely to be wearing the watch on. There are many watches which are designed for a particular purpose like sports watches or ladies formal evening watches. Obviously, they will vary in style and design as well as the functions they offer. A ladies evening watch is unlikely to be suitable for diving in and will probably not feature an alarm clock. But it will probably look fabulously glamorous and compliment your jewellery perfectly.

Design/Image – you will also need to consider how important image is to you and whether you are influenced by fashion and celebrity. Is it important to you to have the latest trend? You may consider what impression the watch you wear gives to other people. For instance, if you are a serious business man you may choose to wear a good quality, traditional watch which will reflect the image you wish to portray.

Reputation – you will probably choose a watch based on the reputation of the manufacturer. You might choose a watch from a long established manufacturer who has built their reputation over the years or you might take the recommendation of a friend. For example, Breil watches are made by a prestigious Italian designer and have a long established reputation for representing good taste and refined style. Seiko watches are made in Japan and have a reputation built on the quality, precision and reliability of their product.

These are just a few of the things to consider when you are buying a watch.
